Rudraksha beads are worn and used for prayer in the Hindu tradition. A bead’s mukhi is the number of natural lines (faces) on it, and each mukhi is traditionally associated with different themes. The notes below describe traditional belief, not guaranteed results.
Common mukhis and their traditional associations
- 4 mukhi – linked to Lord Brahma and traditionally associated with learning, creativity and expression, often chosen by students.
- 5 mukhi – the most commonly worn bead, linked to Lord Shiva and traditionally associated with calm and general well-being.
- 6 mukhi – linked to Lord Kartikeya and traditionally associated with focus and willpower.
How to choose
- Start with your purpose. Is it for prayer, calm, study or general wearing?
- Check authenticity. Buy from a seller who is open about the source and the mukhi count.
- Look at the bead. Natural lines should be clear and the bead firm, not cracked.
- Consider your chart. Astrologers often suggest a mukhi based on the birth chart rather than on a general list.
Care
Keep the bead clean, avoid harsh chemicals and perfume, and store it in a clean, dry place when not worn.
