In Vastu Shastra, the main entrance is treated as the mouth of the house, the place through which energy and people enter. Here are simple, practical points commonly recommended.
Keep it clean and well lit
A clean, bright entrance feels welcoming. Fix dim bulbs, sweep the doorstep daily and keep the area free from dust and cobwebs.
Do not crowd the door
Avoid piling shoes, old furniture, bins or boxes near the entrance. Keep a neat shoe rack to one side instead of in front of the door.
Make sure the door works smoothly
The main door should open and close easily without creaking or sticking. Repair loose hinges and noisy locks.
A clear nameplate
A visible, well-maintained nameplate with your family or house name is traditionally considered good practice.
Direction of the entrance
Vastu traditionally regards entrances in the north, east and north-east as favourable, but the right assessment depends on the whole layout of the house, not on direction alone. If your door faces another direction, there is usually no need to worry: simple corrections are often suggested instead of structural changes.
Add something auspicious
Many families place a toran, rangoli or a small lamp at the entrance. These are cultural traditions that also keep the area cheerful.
